Given how reckless gamers can be in a sandbox with no consequences, it may not be the greatest place to hone a driving skill. However, one fan noticed a truck driver proudly claiming that a Grand Theft Auto game helped them learn how to drive.

A Grand Theft Auto fan in India posted a picture in the GTA subreddit of a sign on the back of a truck that claimed, “Caution: I learned to drive from GTA Vice City.” It’s a sign that is both hilarious and disconcerting. It’s funny to any driver that is in on the joke with how recklessly Grand Theft Auto players can be with driving and causing mayhem. But thinking about it, a Grand Theft Auto game may be some players’ first experience controlling a car. Not to say any of the Grand Theft Auto games are a stout substitute for a driving simulator, but it counts for something.
There are at least some basic things that carry over like acceleration, braking, following directions on a map, and being distracted on the road trying to change the radio station. But after those things, the human ego overpowers the impulsive id to keep people from ignoring the rules of the road and driving with sense and self-preservation.
The Vice City title didn’t have the chaotic driving and racing modes and mini-games that Grand Theft Auto 5 and its online multiplayer component Grand Theft Auto Online do, but the games of that era did have some missions where players had to drive carefully or it would be “mission failed.” Also, seeing that this person is driving a truck for a job, the idea of getting fired or worse for driving with reckless abandon may be enough to keep them in line.
In reality, this sign is just a funny sticker. The shipping crate on the back of it may have been placed on it at any point. Since it’s a “mini-truck,” as they are called in India, this vehicle probably belongs to a company, and it may not even be the same driver who put on the sticker. It may invoke a similar vibe to the running gag of people refusing to drive behind logging trucks à la Final Destination 2, but it’s doubtful that the driver will randomly start running red lights, careening through light posts, and doing insane stunts like in GTA Online.
Grand Theft Auto Trilogy The Definitive Edition is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
