Bandai Namco shared the information in a tweet this morning, clearly proud of the accomplishment. In the tweet, it emphasizes how far players and the game have come since its launch and takes extra care to attribute Dragon Ball FighterZ’ success to its loyal player base above all else.

This 5 million figure is worldwide and includes sales on all consoles including PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. This is particularly impressive considering Dragon Ball FighterZ doesn’t offer crossplay of any kind to promote players buying it on separate consoles. This milestone puts it in line with the best of the best in terms of DBZ games, rivaling even Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2.
Dragon Ball FighterZ has grown significantly since its release back in January of 2018. The game has added numerous characters over the course of the last two years, including powerhouses like Vegito Blue, Fused Zamasu, and most recently, Ultra Instinct Goku. Part of what sets this game apart from other Dragon Ball Z games is that it really takes itself seriously as a hardcore fighting game. Many previous DBZ games were enjoyable but lacked the depth and systems needed to truly stake a claim as a fighting game, and that is not a problem that FighterZ has.
What’s more, the unique animation style of Dragon Ball FighterZ makes combat seem clean and precise while still invoking the nostalgia that comes alongside the Dragon Ball franchise. It is also one of the few DBZ games so far to really delve into the content of Dragon Ball Super, which no doubt aids in its popularity. With FighterZ’s season 3 in full swing and yet more characters being added to the roster, these numbers will no doubt continue to grow as players find a character which works well for them.
As universally beloved as Dragon Ball Z is in general, Dragon Ball Z games tend to occupy a somewhat niche market. As such, it isn’t often that a DBZ game breaches 5 million units sold, making this a noteworthy accomplishment. It’s also worth noting that Dragon Ball FighterZ is only in its second year, meaning there is probably a lot more life left in the game.
Dragon Ball FighterZ is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
