One of Dragon Quest’s original creators and the current head of the franchise, Yuji Hori, announced on Twitter recently that Dragon Quest 12 was in development. Hori took to Twitter to wish his fans a happy New Year, but provided an update on the Dragon Quest franchise at the same time. Hori says, loosely translated, that “12 seems to be a bit ahead” in terms of development. He doesn’t provide any release window or timeframe for Dragon Quest 12, but confirmation that the game exists and is moving along well should appease fans for the time being.

Hori also mentions in his tweet that while Dragon Quest 12 development is ongoing, fans can expect some other surprises to release in the time being. Hori doesn’t make any promises but does note that there may be multiple projects that release before Dragon Quest 12. It’s unclear if Hori is referring explicitly to games or if he’s including other multimedia, as there are a variety of anime and manga-related Dragon Quest projects in the past.

If Hori is talking about video game projects, Dragon Quest has several which could be continued in the relatively near future. While Dragon Quest Builders 2 recently launched in 2018, given that the first game launched in 2016 a third could potentially be out in 2020 or 2021. Another Dragon Quest Heroes musou game is also about due. Alternatively, Square Enix could be working on a new Dragon Quest Monsters, Mystery Dungeon, or Slime game.

Despite the good news, it may be some time before Square Enix has any Dragon Quest news to share. Hori could be teasing projects that may yet be years away from release. Game developers tend to think in timelines a little grander than what video game fans do. Nevertheless, just the knowledge that Dragon Quest 12 and several other Dragon Quest projects are in development should keep fans content for the time being.

Dragon Quest 12 has no currently announced release window or supported platforms.
