For those that may not remember, while playing through Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Android 21 appeared as the “Female Researcher” who helped Dr. Briefs run the training room. She was the one responsible for upgrading and maintaining the room, and also salvaged Bonyu’s combat data from the Ginyu Force’s Attack Pods. Beyond this, she serves no purpose in the game, to the disappointment of many Dragon Ball FighterZ fans around the world.

Who is Android 21?

In Dragon Ball FighterZ, Android 21 served as the main antagonist. It was revealed that she was created by Dr. Gero as a replica of his late wife, with Android 16 being the Dr’s late son. What makes her particularly interesting is that she contains the cells of all the Z Fighters, Frieza, Cell, and even Majin Buu, making her an incredibly powerful adversary, most certainly stronger than anything the Z Fighters face during Dragon Ball Z. Although Dragon Ball FighterZ is generally considered to have one of the worst stories of all time for a Dragon Ball Z game, Android 21 is unanimously considered the best thing to come out of that story.

While in her “Good Form,” she looks just as she does in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. She is incredibly intelligent and is thought to be even smarter than Dr. Gero. In FighterZ, when she witnesses the death of Android 16, the anger causes a fission which splits her into two separate entities, good and evil. The evil form of Android 21 greatly resembles Majin Buu, and her hunger for all things sweet is reminiscent of that as well. It is in this form that she proves to be most deadly.

Android 21 in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

In Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Android 21’s main purpose is to run the training room. Unfortunately, now that Whis has replaced Bonyu as Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot’s best grind, the training room is all but obsolete, and as a result so is Android 21.Once players have fully upgraded the training room and obtained all the know-how skills from those training missions, there is little reason to ever return to see Android 21.

With all that said, Android 21 does make an appearance out in the field at various points throughout the story, travelling to specific points of interest and studying what she finds. The most intriguing instance of this is when Android 21 is found at the wreckage of Dr. Gero’s laboratory, as she seems to take great interest in that place. This makes sense given that she was created there, but it certainly hints at some kind of ulterior motive. It will be interesting to see if this manifests in some way.

Android 21 as Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot DLC

When the Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot season pass was first released, it showed that the first two DLCs would be original story episodes, prompting many to believe that it would expand on the stories of Android 21, Bonyu, Mira, and Towa. Not long before DLC 1 came out, that nomenclature was subtly changed to Boss Battle Episodes, which fans now know means Beerus and most likely another Dragon Ball Super antagonist for DLC 2. Because of this, it is unlikely that Android 21 will appear in a future DLC in any major way.

DLC 2 is set to be another boss battle episode, and odds are it will follow along with the first DLC and introduce another Dragon Ball Super villain and form. The most plausible theories are that the antagonist of the next DLC will be either Golden Frieza or Hit, and that Goku and Vegeta will gain access to Super Saiyan Blue as a result of further training with Whis. DLC 3 is going to be a new story arc, and rumors point towards the Future Trunks Saga being adapted for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. This would make sense because of all the Dragon Ball Super arcs, the Future Trunks Saga is easily the most story oriented.

Will Android 21 Get More Content in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot?

If Android 21 ends up getting more content in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, it will almost certainly need to be as a free update. There is simply no room for Bandai Namco to explore her character or story more in the currently announced DLCs, and there has been no word about plans for further support after DLC 3. In spite of this, she and other characters like Bonyu still have a ton of potential and unexplored story beats, so it would be a shame for them to be left to the wayside completely.

There are rumors that Bandai Namco is planning a training room update as free content which would expand its uses. This would be great as Android 21 is tied to the training room, it could mean more development for her as a character. This would also be a way for Kakarot to explore Bonyu more as a character, and even include short training missions for various Dragon Ball Z movie villains such as Cooler or Dragon Ball Z Broly. Of course, these are all just rumors, so fans should take them with a grain of salt, but it seems like the best shot that Android 21 has of getting more of a spotlight in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot this year.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
